Are you preparing for a drywall and taping project? Drywall has become a universal material for building ceilings in walls, due to its durability and affordability. There are many things that can go wrong due to miscalculation or poor execution, which is why it's important that drywall projects are only carried out by experienced and trained individuals.

If you are thinking about beginning a drywall project, here are six things you should know about Drywall...

  1. Drywall panels are combined to create ceilings and walls, and stay in place with screws. Keyhole saws are the most favourable tools for cutting the holes through which the screws can be drilled when the drywall is ready for use.
  2. Dust can become a huge issue if not correctly dealt with. It usually occurs when the compound is being sanded off of drywall. Before sanding, turn off air conditioning and close off vents so that dust doesn't get into the system. Knowing your health and safety is imperative when it comes to any construction project, so wearing PPE is essential when dealing with dust.
  3. Extra mesh tape is a must. It needs to be applied to the drywall corners in the ceiling in order to ensure the strength and integrity of the ceiling.
  4. There are two choices of mud: pre-mixed and powdered. Personal preference is usually key, however if you are a beginner pre-mixed is recommended. Whichever you choose, the best way to stir up your mud is likened to how you would stir paint. There shouldn't be any air bubbles or inconsistency.
  5. A common mistake made when drywalling is overlapping the sheets of drywall on the corners. It is essential that the edge of the sheet matches the edge of the stud on both sides of the corner. This allows the corner beads to sit flush on the wall, and prevents rocking.
  6. Photograph your installation progress. This is a great way to get a full inspection of the walls and/or ceiling. It can help you to identify errors or aid further development in the project.
